Intro

What is the purpose of any media product? To make money.


Film industry used to be female dominated then it got a lot more popular and men became dominant realising they could make money from it.


"Classical Hollywood narrative" - The assumption the audience is stupid so everything needs to be pointed out.

  • Emphasis of spatial continuity - The audience always knows where they are at any time.
  • Emphasis of temporal continuity - The audience always knows on what order the events have transpired and any flashbacks and so forth will be clearly signposted
  • Film must be realistic and not make reference to other filmic and popular texts

Conglomeration - A conglomerate is a corporation that consists of a group of businesses dealing in different products or services. Conglomeration is the process of a conglomerate being formed. e.g. Disneyland, Disney channel, Disney store, Disney, Vice magazine

Vertical Integration - one company buys other companies in the different stages of the production and circulation.

Horizontal Integration - One company buys other companies in the same sector to reduce competition

Digital Technologies - Any technology which involves computers to function e.g. mobile phone, digital cameras, pc

Regulation - A rule that has to be followed

Convergence - The coming together of different media products/industries

Company Ident - Short clip of the distributor and producer company name e.g. Universal Studios, Legendary Pictures

Recent developments in the film industry (distribution, exhibition)

Social media - Most people use it so its a great advertising tool
Online piracy - larger audience can reach films through this e.g. pirate bay, popcorn time, putlocker
Digital technology - Mobile phones, Pc's, easier to reach a large audience
DVD's - Buy and keep in your home 
Streaming sites - Netflix and etc allow to watch anything in your home

Universal Pictures

Universal Pictures is an American film studio, owned by Comcast through its wholly owned subsidiary NBCUniversal, and is one of Hollywood's "Big Six" film studios. Its production studios are at 100 Universal City Plaza Drive in Universal City, California. Distribution and other corporate offices are in New York City. Universal Studios is a member of the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA). Universal was founded in 1912 by the German Carl Laemmle (pronounced "LEM-lee"), Mark Dintenfass, Charles O. Baumann, Adam Kessel, Pat Powers, William Swanson, David Horsley, Robert H. Cochrane, and Jules Brulatour. 
It is the world's fourth oldest major film studio, after the renowned French studios Gaumont Film Company and Pathé, and the Danish Nordisk Film company. 
Six of Universal Studios' films; Jaws (1975), E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982), Jurassic Park (1993), Despicable Me 2 (2013), Furious 7 (2015) and Jurassic World (2015) achieved box office records, with the first three (which were directed by Steven Spielberg) all becoming the highest-grossing film at the time of its initial release.

Universal Studios Florida is a theme park located in Orlando, Florida. Opened on June 7, 1990, the park's theme is the entertainment industry, in particular movies and television.

Mainstream Magazine - Woman (23-29) August 1964 Weekly magazine by IPC, started publishing in 1937, still publishing today. 1960's sold 3  million copies per week in 1960. 80p in modern money, 7p in that day. Cheap - aimed at working class and some middle-class women. Women magazines became very popular post-war selling around 12 million per week. Perhaps this is because women aspired to be stereotypical housewives and go back to how things used to be and conform to traditional? As they sell 1/4 of the 12 million it is a best selling magazine. A market leader. Capitalist. Consumerism. Ad's everywhere, promotes spending. Layout and design:  Font size, type, colour and connotations:   Called "Woman" implies specifically for females and is a broad, inclusive word e.g. lady formal and fancy while girl is child whereas woman is every grown female. Water Aid Advert: Claudia sings sunshine on a rainy day Water Aid context Established in 1981 as a response to the United Nations campaign for clean water, sanitisation, British advert primarily aimed at British people. Set in Zambia. Closeups positions us directly with her. The use of extreme closeups is to make us like or dislike something and here it is used to make us like her. Shot with lots of buckets shows just how much they need - surrounding one fountain. Lots of work needs to be done to get them the water they need. Bright pink flowers vs dull pink shoes. Positive compared to other charity adverts - progress and positivity. They are grateful and joyful for the resources they have been given from Britain. Advert: Preferred - Sympathetic to those in poverty/those in need in Africa. Get them to donate. Dominant - Opposition - Disrespecting African people by stereotyping them as poor and impoverished.
